It's common sense but a learning curve

As I keep reading and knowing more and more about usability, what I find, it's the matter of common sense. But no body uses it.

When we talk about usability, it's a nice subject, but when really working on something we usually forget about this part and work with our style. Because we are used to it.

example :
My boss asked me to find out address of one company, so I went to their website and then went to "Contact Us" page. I copied that link and sent to boss.
http://www.xyz.com/contactus.htm

brummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Where does it gone? where is my so called usability common sense.
I could have think that instead of this link, I would have copied that address from that page and directly forwarded to boss, as he is simply not interested in website and what he wanted was address.
Boss called me up and gave me first lesson about practical usability. Use Ability of common sense everywhere. :) I guess learning how to use common sense is learning usability.

Best example of Remote Control Usability

Here you can see a wonderful usability example of a Remote Control. It's tivo HD remote control.
* For TV viewing, you need channel and volume buttons and channel selection, placed with a nice way, and especially the MUTE button is in center of Channel change and volume buttons, because that button you most of the time press in emergency, SO EASY TO FIND.

* The record button is also there between channel and volume buttons so again an emergency important button at a nice location.

* If you are watching DVD/CD, the traditional navigation controls.
* For channel selection, don't have to worry about 1 digit channel or 2 digit channel. Just press the channel numbers and then press ENTER. GREATTTTTT.

* OK and Cancel buttons (though I think , OK and Cancel should be written on Green and Red buttons) for Menu navigation but small MENU button should be there in center of the big round navigation panel.

* If add four more buttons for INPUT selection, it's a mid-level universal remote.

What a wonderful example of Usability.

it's WOW......it's Microsoft

I was watching a demo of Apple i-Phone. it was wonderful and the zooming thing is more interesting. Overall it seems to be a wonderful gadget so I was very much impressed with usability.

I was just thinking about these features on a computer and one of my friend, Saurabh asked me to have a look at Microsoft Surface Usability. .

I don't want to make any comment about this, just click and check yourself. It's ....oh sorry no comments, check yourself. :)

ORKUT must be looking here ;), someone thinks about User

If somebody should see my 18th sept. post, it must be orkut.

The birthday reminders changed its position, came above user updates.

I don't know, who checked there but I am happy that I have also mentioned same error.

So, you experts seeeeeee,,,,, even I can think bit like you :) (kiddin)

Lego is a nice play .... oh modular wardrobe !!!!

My last post was about a problem of shifting wardrobe without taking the clothes and other stuff out.

What I can think of as solution
1. Put down basic elements of a modern wardrobe

2. Separate down different elements

3. Plan a common locking system for each element

4. so I mean to say, design a modular wardrobe, which can also change shape according to the new premises where it's to be placed, !!!!!! if you have played LEGO....:)

Easy to say but difficult design task

Let me try first on paper, but will surely put the final design here. (I don't know any design tool so will put on paper and then scan and upload on this space)

Wish me good luck for this, guys. And I am new, so all senior design people waiting for some great ideas to come out from your side.

Most of the people, who work for government, our government gives them pleasure to live in new house every 2 to 5 years by giving transfers. Lucky Me, I am not gov. employee.

Because, now everywhere you find buildings and if you are lucky enough then you will get house on 5th, 6th or 10th floor. Ok about you, your family and children as they can use lift, but what about your wardrobe!!!!!!.

User Experienced : Take all the clothes and material out as it will be heavy enough.
With help of 3-4 more people, try to reach mount everest, and if
you are good with everything, your wardrobe will be injured for
sure.

New Design : Oh I am user, so designers can give solution. So brilliant brains
come, show magic....:)

Oh , this is called paradox---> and target is ORKUT !!!

As I have mentioned on my first post only, that here only web usability won't be discussed but just after starting this blog, first thing I noticed is something related to that, and that is about our MTV youth icon of '07.
YES, you guessed it right.
ORKUT

The new layout of Orkut is good, but for birthday reminders you have to scroll down, so it's not eye catchy that as you open your account and you find the birthday of your dear friend. With new layout, if person opens the page, simply check messages, check scraps and reply and simply don't remember to see birthday section unless one is so desperate to wish somebody "Happy Birthday"

Because of this, I missed birthdays of many of my friends as I was much reliable on orkut for birthday reminders.

I think, locations for these kinda things should be catchy, so the place where friends list is displayed, the Birthday reminders should come.
